This website has a ranking system for restaurants and bars. Check out what people have said and voted for so far:

I would have to suggest Eo Ipso. Everything that I have eaten there has been good to great for a reasonable price.

If you like Italian food: check out various Italian restaurants!
Good pizzas, you will find in STADTHOF http://www.stadthof.ch, which is at the Barfüsserplatz, behind the kiosk/BVB house (where you can buy tickets). Ok, pizzas are pretty expensive there - but you might easily afford it working in this branch ;-) Then, a restaurant which is considered the finest one, voilà: http://www.stucki-bruderholz.ch (Bruderholz, up the hill behind the railway station Basel SBB).

If you like japanese-style food (not just sushi ;) ), I can highly recommend Sakura at the train station. Half of the restaurant is a so-called Teppanyaki restaurant aka "Japanese steakhouse", and the other half is a sushi restaurant. The food is very good, albeit a bit pricy (but definitely worth the money), and it's fun to watch the cook prepare the dishes in front of you on a big griddle.

But please note that this kind of teppanyaki is not an authentic Japanese dish, you will hardly find a teppanyaki "steakhouse" in Japan. The teppanyaki restaurants in Japan serve typical Japanese dishes, like okonomiyaki or yakisoba that you or a cook will prepare at the table. The Western teppanyaki-style restaurants like Sakura or other similar Japanese restaurants in Europe and US serve more western-style food prepared on a traditional teppan (iron plate/griddle); and therefore became very popular outside of Japan.

Despite all that, I think the food is very good. T. ;)

Hi Liane, if you are looking for specific restaurants and their adress, you can find the official restaurant guide of the Basel region here. You can search for restaurants by district (Kleinbasel, St. Johann etc.), by category (Gourmet, Vegi, typical Basel etc.), by special search parameter (non-smoking, sunday brunch etc.) or you can enter the name of a restaurant in the search box. The restaurant guide contains not only restaurants in Basel-Stadt and Basel-Land, but also many restaurants in the cross-border regions of Alsace and Südbaden. Hope that helps, T.
